The plot usually concerns itself with specific points of the story and the pattern of their relation. Or if you are writing an emotional and angsty romance, get to know your characters so well that you can find believable reasons for them to act this way, and then make your readers buy into that.
The local stories are a great source of fresh ideas. Use parody and satire. Only subplots that are so vital that you could not remove them without destroying your novel get to stick around.
Mix them up completely. They live on an island in the middle of a lava lake. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. What would you touch? To open the door, a person must use a key whittled out of one of his or her own bones.

When your character talks to you, make sure what she says makes sense in your current plot and background. Would one or two be interesting enough?
Would the horror writer have the cab driver channel a ghost?
You can find a lot of ideas this way, just by asking yourself who might have a dispute with someone in that profession. Sure, you will probably never use that random band name or random song lyrics in your romance novel.

Paste each section on a separate page.
